The Bible tells them that it is wrong to have a Graven Image of yourself. They interpret this to mean that having a photo of oneself is a sin and therefore forbidden.
This was the only reason I ever got when I wondered why we did not have pictures of ourselves. I was a child of many questions which also got me in trouble quite often but I wanted better answers….I guess. However,my parents only taught me how their parents had taught them,so I truly believe that more in depth answers could not be provided.
My questions were as follows:
- Then why do we have pictures of non-Amish people on calendars hanging on the wall?
- Why is it okay to have pictures of young Amish children that was taken back in the 30′s &40′s?
- Why was it not a sin to have photos of self when camera’s first became available but it is now?
To many of my questions I was sternly reminded that obedience is the only way for a small chance of a spot in Heaven and I needed to stop asking questions. That is when I knew I had stepped over the bounds of pushing the current rules of the church.
When I turned twenty one years old I along with a few others in my community wanted to have camera’s and take pictures of each other. I bought a camera at a local store and did take some pictures of my siblings, cousins, and close friends. I had to be very careful of who I took a picture of because many would rat you out to the elders of the church.
The pictures I took are the only few I have of my siblings and I treasure them greatly.
I hope this is helpful and if you have more questions please submit them at www.TheAmishLady.com
